COMMUNICATIONS

There are about 150,000 main landlines installed using UTL or MTN landlines, and about 1.2 million cellophone subscribers to the MTN, Celtel and Mango respectively. The internet country code is .ug

• Telephones - main lines in use: 54,074 (1998)
• Telephones - mobile cellular: 9,000 (1998)

Telephone system: seriously inadequate; two cellular systems have been introduced, but a sharp increase in the number of main lines is essential; e-mail and Internet services are available
domestic: intercity traffic by wire, microwave radio relay, and radiotelephone communication stations, fixed and mobile cellular systems for short range traffic international: satellite earth stations - 1 Intelsat (Atlantic Ocean) and 1 Inmarsat; analog links to Kenya and Tanzania

Radio Broadcast

Radio broadcast is via AM, FM and ,shortwave 1&2 and MW. There are several FM radio stations with each of the 56 districts with at least one radio station. The majority of the FM sation are in Kampala mainly. There are approximately 10 million radios in use. Radio broadcast stations: AM 19, FM 4, shortwave 5 (1998)

Television

There are four local TV stations namely; WBS, TOP TV, Light House TV, and Channel TV. Other region stations like East African TV and international stations are received via satelite. Currently about 1 million TV are used. Television broadcast stations: 8 (plus one low-power repeater) (1999). Televisions: 315,000 (1997)

Internet

There are three major Internet Service Providers namely MTN, UTL and Infocom. several internet cafés exist with at least one per district, though most of them are in major towns and cities like Kampala, Entebbe, jinja. communication by e-mail has increased with the Uganda Communication Commission Rural Communication development Fund (RCDF).
