Traveling and enjoying a new destination with new attractions and activities with no hinderance is a great experience for travelers on Falling sick and failing to do any activity is the worst experience a traveler can face on his or her safari to Uganda and other African countries. For those planning gorilla safaris, good health is one of the key features for a successful gorilla trekking tour in Uganda and other countries sheltering the endangered species which are Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. It can be the worst experience getting sick while your Uganda safari. Below are important to take precautions and keep health on your dream vacation.
It’s very important to take health safety measures when traveling to Uganda since it comprises of tropical climate. Uganda travelers don’t usually get sick but prevention is better than cure. A holiday to Africa is most of the time a once in a lifetime opportunity the needs you to be in very good health so that you fully enjoy it and create beautiful lasting memories. Below is a compiled list that should help you keep good health

Immunizations: This should be done right from home before setting off for Africa. Yellow fever vaccination is very necessary if you have visited any country where it exists, but the rest of diseases such as – tetanus, polio and diphtheria, hepatitis A and B, meningitis depend on your doctor’s advice whether they are necessary or not.
Malaria Prevention: This is the one most likely to catch you, Uganda being a tropical country. Precautionary medication includes; malarone, doxycycline and mefloquine. These are the standard. Malarone being the best and most expensive, doxycycline makes some sensitive to the sun, make sure your not allergic to which ever meds you go for. Start your regiment before you arrive in Uganda and follow directions as prescribed by medical persons.

Drink Clean water: Don’t drink just any kind of water while in Africa. Take precaution and stay away from ice cubes. Stick with only bottled waters here and make sure to buy it from big supermarkets or shops. If you boil water, do so ad make sure its boils up to 100 degrees take no chances with taking half or un boiled water.

Travelers Running Stomach: This is very common with the first day of your safari. Just eat well-prepared hot food – do not eat cold food. Make it a point to wash your hands before eating with soap and water – don’t take liberties of thinking your hands are clean – what ever you torch here is dirty. You’re encouraged to keep away from raw foods such as salads, fruit salads. Bring some Imodium and Ciproflaxin which is an antibiotic and will help in extreme cases. Rare do such cases happen but taking precaution should come in handy since consequences can be extreme and painful.

Bites, bites: There are several other insects apart from mosquitoes that can be a threat to travelers – Uganda being tropical client, these include insects like Tsetse flies. The best precaution is to spray your body with insect repellant every single day before you set to bed. Wear loose cotton clothing. I like jeans, even though they are heavy, and this is a warm climate, I find they protect quite well. Also wear long sleeved shirts and avoid shorts in the evenings. At your hotel or safari lodge, have them spray in the evening as you go out for dinner. In many hotels it is automatically done. Use the mosquito net and a fan, flying things do not like to move against the wind. When on safari in the game park – avoid blue shirts – Tsetse flies are attracted by them and will take a bit of your blood. The Australian RID works against both Tsetse flies and mosquitoes.

Sunburn: Pack one from home, but can also easily be acquired in Uganda, make sure to apply thick layers on your skin to protect it from sun burns. If your hair is thinning, wear a hat. If you are going on a boat ride on the Nile or Lake Victoria, lotion is the key to avoid getting burned.

Bilharzia: A small snail that at the end of the day causes damage to your organs. Make sure not to swim in lakes, there are not many that are truly Bilharzia free. Enjoy the view of the lake instead. Lake Bunyonyi is Bilharzia free.

HIV-AIDS, STD’s: Best way to avoid is abstaining. The biggest percentage of bar girls in Kampala have STD’s and HIV-AIDS. For safety use a Condom if you cannot abstain. Of recent, many prostitutes are known to also rob their clients of everything, wallet, money, passport, watch, cell phone while you sleep. Recent police reports have shown that some use chloroform on body to knock you out and then take your things. This has happened in up-market hotels. Reliable statistics to sober you-almost 60% of prostitutes have STD’s and almost 50% are HIV positive. In recent years the HIV infection rate has increased, attributable to the myth that ARV drugs cure (deal with symptoms, that circumcision protects you totally from HIV (reality it reduces the chances). In the 90′s there was a joint effort from the President and his wife along with the faith communities and everyone else that joined forces to educate people about HIV. This educational process has waned and changed and the results are higher percentages of new infections.

Meningitis: You can get inoculated before you arrive and avoid the chance of getting it.

Nicks and Cuts: If untreated, they become the cause of infection that can last a long time. During gorilla tracking, wear buggy clothes. Clean the cut or nick properly. Use a proper anti-septic cream.

Heat Rash: Cool down, wear baggy clothing and powder your body with talc.

Snakes: They more often move away from you before you ever meet them. Most snakes are not poisonous. If you are a backpacker, you will not come across some of them.

Early this year (2018), 5 buses were put on road four of which are 74 seaters and one an open roof double decker bus to ease the movement of travelers to all parts of Uganda for a gorilla trekking tour in Bwindi forets and Mgahinga gorilla national parks, chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National park and game viewing safaris in savannah national parks all over Uganda. The buses were launched by UWA, a government body responsible for tourism and wildlife conservation in Uganda with the support of the government. The major aim of the newly introduced buses is to encourage domestic tourism in Uganda motivating Uganda’s to travel within their country exploring all that their country offers with no hindrance.
For the past years, lack of transport has been a complaint for many Uganda’s since they would find it find to connect to Uganda’s remote areas where most tourism attraction are located. The lunching of Tulambule buses comes as good news for those who love to tour the country and appreciate the beautiful landscape, riches and nature. Right now, moving to, within and from all Uganda national parks has been made easy with travelers assured of comfort, spectacular views and their safety with the property they own which all result into a memorable experience. For the start, the launched buses will take travelers to the great Murchison falls national park, kidepo valley national park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, lake Mburo national park and semiliki national park among others.

Many official people who among others include the state minister for tourism Uganda, miss tourism in the northern region and other members from the Board of governance from Uganda tourism Board and Uganda Wildlife Authority graced the launching of the Tulambule buses. The event took place at the head quarters of Uganda wildlife authority in Kampala Uganda. With the new buses, no more complaints are expected from Uganda since lack of transport has been a major excuse for limited domestic tourism in the country. The government and responsible tourism bodies realized a need for Ugandans to explore their country since tourism development starts from within.
The ministry of tourism and the Uganda wildlife authority therefore expect an incre4saed number of Ugandan’s to take part in tourism hence promoting Uganda’s tourism industry.

The Secret Behind the Boosting of Uganda’s Tourism

0

While looking at the present state of Uganda’s tourism sector, the pearl of Africa has undeniably experienced a steady progress over the years. An increase in tourist arrivals, new hotels and direct flights into Uganda indicate that the country has surely taken a step forward as far as tourism sector is concerned. The success in tourism and the related sectors is greatly attributed to extensive marketing by the Uganda Tourism Board, which has opened Uganda to the rest of the world. The use of all effective marketing channels mostly social media by the Uganda Tourism Board has put Uganda on the world tourism map. Adding to the launching of the public relations campaigns in European and American mainstream media, UTB has made good use of today’s most effective marketing social media and was ranked second to South Africa on twitter which has attracted an increased number of travelers coming for gorilla treks, wildlife safaris and mountaineering experiences across the country. In the same way, the United Kingdoms’ rough guide ranked Uganda as the fourth best tourism destination in 2017. This year (2017) has been Uganda’s remarkable year in which the country has achieved progress in opening up five star hotels in Kampala hence assuring travelers of quality services. Similarly, roads have been constructed to ease transport to the remote areas of Uganda where national and other tourism attractions are located.

Rising visitor numbers
Uganda tourism statistics show a steady increase in the number of tourist arrivals to Uganda for the last ten years. In 2016, Uganda received 1.4 million tourists bringing in $1.4 billion according to the 2016 Uganda Wildlife Authority statistics. In 1990, Uganda received only 69,000 visitors, which number increased to 642,000 in 2007 when the war ended. Since then, the country has experienced steady tourist increase except in 2009 when tourist arrivals fell from 806,000 in 2008 to 844,000 which has a great set back. Fortunately in 2010, Uganda received 946,000 international travelers and then 1.4 million in 2016. Similarly, Uganda wildlife authority registered over 245,725 tourists half of whom are non-east Africans visiting the national parks, game reserves and other protected areas in Uganda. UWA is a government body responsible for the country’s 10 national parks, 12 wildlife reserves, 5 community wildlife management areas and 13 wildlife sanctuaries all situated in different parts of the country. Uganda anticipates to receive 4 million travelers in 2020 id the steady increase and tourism progress is maintained.

New road constructed
Besides hotels and lodgers, Uganda government has invested in rehabilitation of roads connecting to major tourism spots in the country. The construction of Mbarara – kabale highway and kabale – kisoro high way has eased transportation to Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga gorilla national parks home to the critically endangered mountain gorillas. Travelling time from Entebbe to Bwindi has now reduced to 8-9 hours drive compared to 4-5 days, which travelers would spend in the past decades before reaching those gorilla destinations. The short distance of volcanoes national park from Kigali international airport was a great hindrance to Uganda’s gorilla tourism since most travelers would opt for Rwanda instead of Uganda. The ease of transport to Bwindi and Mgahinga gorilla national parks has therefore enhanced thousands of travelers to book gorilla tours in uganda and Rwanda with ease of travel to and from gorilla national parks. To Uganda’s advantage, Rwanda’s increased incased gorilla permit price has shifted most travelers to trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi and Mgahinga where the permit is relatively cheaper. Travelers are therefore reminded to book six months in advance due to the high demand. Similarly, the Kampala Entebbe express highway that is still under construction is hoped to ease the connection of Kampala to Entebbe international airport.

New luxury hotels
Presently, Uganda has heavily invested in building up new luxury hotels to provide quality services for travelers. The government of Uganda has put hands together with international investors and other W Hospitality group survey on hotel chains development in Africa to build five and four star hotels and lodges in all parts of Uganda especially in Kampala. This year, Golden Tulip Canaan Kampala managed by the Auspices of golden tulip an international hotel chain, and the Pearl of Africa Hotel managed by South Africa’s sovereign hotels were opened in Kampala. Both hotels are situated in Nakasero in the central business district which reward travelers with an over look of Kampala city and all activities which take place in the city center. The new hotels have transformed Uganda into the best destination for competitive meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) in the region providing them with enough and quality boardrooms, meeting rooms and quality services. Uganda now has 90 luxury hotels and 30 lodges which is a great achievement

Going forward
Though most travelers to Uganda originate form Africa, the government and UTB has tirelessly invested in marketing its attractions in Europe and north America so as to attract European and American travelers who stay longer and spend more money on their safaris. More still, the Uganda tourism board aims at luring more African travellers especially from West Africa, South Africa and Kenya. The government is to hire public relations firms to market Uganda in Kenya, South Africa and West Africa. Game viewing is the biggest attraction for most international travelers to Uganda which reward them with a close encounter with the African big five which are elephants, lions, buffalos, leopards and rhinos not missing out the iconic chimpanzees in kibale and the critically mountain gorillas in the tropical rain forests of Bwindi and Mgahinga gorilla national parks. Besides wildlife, Uganda is a home to the source of the Nile, lake victoria, birds, a high concentration of primates in kibale forest national, park. On the other hand most Uganda tourists form Kenya and Kenya are attracted by Uganda’s bustling entertainment scene.

Resilient aviation sector
Despite the defunct Uganda airline, the variation sector in March 2017 established the Vule airways while Uganda’s newest airline is to start its flights earlier. Fortunately, Uganda is blessed with many international airlines, which have launches flights to Entebbe international airport in the few years. Of recent, Qatar airways and east African safaris joined the fray while Brussels airlines launched daily flights between Entebbe and Brussels.

Conclusively therefore, Uganda is a unique tourism destination which offer it all to meet and exceed all travelers expectations. New hotels have been established to provide quality products, roads ease transport and a variety of attractions are at your display.

Amidst anxiety as Rwanda Development Board (RDB) doubling the price of the Rwanda gorilla permits from $750 to $1500, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) maintains Uganda gorilla permit prices at $600. Mountain gorilla trekking is the top attraction for countries – Uganda, Rwanda ad Congo and has seen large numbers of tourist flock the countries to catch a glimpse of the rare mountain gorillas in the jungle.

The UWA guaranteed all tour operators that they wouldn’t be increase gorilla permit price for the next 12 months. Allowing global travelers the opportunity to fulfill lifelong dreams to see these animals is key to their conservation”.

Uganda is home to the highest number of mountain gorillas inhabited in 2 national parks both in south western Uganda. The highest number of mountain gorillas attract thousands of travelers coming for gorilla tours from all parts of the world. Bwindi national park has 13 habituated gorillas families spread over 4 sectors of Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. In addition Bwindi offers gorilla habituation experience where tourists get the opportunity to be unclose with gorillas for 4hours instead of the ordinary 1 hour. Another place to watch gorillas in the jungle is Mgahinga national park comprising of one habituated gorilla family. Mgahinga national park is also part of the 3 national parks of the Virunga conservation region also shared by Volcanoes national park in Rwanda and Virunga national park in Democratic Republic of Congo.

Uganda matins her price for gorilla permits so as to allow all types of travelers from budget to luxury to take part in a lifelong dream of seeing gorillas in their natural habitat. Hiking Mount Rwenzori

Hiking to the top of mount Rwenzori is one of the adventurous activities you should not miss on your Uganda safari, one of the key features after which Uganda is named the pearl of Africa. Also, known as mountains of the moon, Mount Rwenzori is situated in kasese district in the borders of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mount Rwenzori stands at 4500m above sea level and is the second highest peak in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The high altitude has been a great challenge for travelers taking 5-6 full days to reach margarita the highest peak of Mount Rwenzori at 5,119m above sea level making it quite hard to enjoy uganda safaris as a complete package. To ease the hiking up to t mountain summit therefore, the government is to start using of cable cars, which shorten the hiking time as well as saving energy for the clients.
The plans to install cable cars for climbers to mount Rwenzori was revealed by the minister to tourism in the 8th annual tourism sector review conference that was held recently at Serena hotel Kampala. While in the conference, the prime minister of Uganda Ruhakana Rugunda assured attendees that the government was done with feasibility study for the project of cable cars and only waiting to report from the consultants on how to progress wit the installation of the cable cars. Once consultations are done, the government will discuss with relevant stakeholders after which contractors will be procured to install the cable cars.

The introduction of cable cars is also a strategy for boosting tourism in Mount Rwenzori national park and Uganda as a whole. Mount Rwenzori comprise of six main peaks, which go beyond 4500 meters above sea level. Some peaks such as Mt Stanley, Mt Speke, Mt baker, Mt Gessi are on the other side of the Democratic Republic of Congo while Mt Luigi di Savoia and Mt Emin Pasha are fully in Uganda. Not only do travelers enjoy the beautiful sceneries but also permanent snow and glaciers at the summit of Mount Rwenzori.

Cables cars were first introduced in Kenya to ease the hiking of Mount Kenya by the government bodies and responsible tourism bodies. Since their introduction, may people have been seen taking part in hiking mount Kenya, which has promoted tourism industry in Kenya. The government of Kenya was the first to intrude cable cars to ease the hiking of Mount Keya and many people have been witnessed climbing and enjoying the hiking experience.

Many adventurous travelers have taken part in hiking t the summit of Mount Rwenzori despite it being strenuous. Similarly most people hike mount Rwenzori to appreciate and cherish the beauty that nature offers. Travelers are rewarded with spectacular views of the mountain rangers as well as wildlife in Rwenzori national park in the slopes of the mountain.

Besides cable cars for Mountain climbing, the government also realized a need to develop a master plan for the source of the Nile. It was discovered that despite it being known worldwide as a major attraction every one should visit on a Uganda safari, the source of the Nile has not attracted as many travelers as expected. This therefore calls for a master plan so as to attract private sectors to invest in infrastructures such as hotels, lodges and road construction.

In terms of tourism progress, Uganda’s tourism sector has achieved steady progress in the past year. There has been an increase in the number of tourist arrivals to Uganda in the financial year 3016/2017 and these travelers are interested in exploring and visiting different tourism spots in all parts of the country. Tourism is Uganda’s leading foreign exchange earner, which bring in roughly US$1.37 billion (UGX6.17 trillion) to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Basing on the steady increase of tourist arrivals to Uganda in the past years, Uganda expects to receive over 250,000 travelers in 2018. According to Uganda’s present tourism statistics, there has been a great increase in the number of tourist arrivals coming for Uganda safaris to visit different tourism sites in all parts of the country. Uganda has so far received over 1.3 million travelers which number is expected to increase by a quarter to 1.56 million in 2018 if all strategies are put in place. The hope for many tourists has been raised by various strategies which have been put by the government in cooperation with responsible tourism bodies such as the Uganda Tourism Board, (UTB) in charge of marketing and development of new tourism products, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) responsible for wildlife conservation while the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is the over seer of all tourism operations in Uganda.

The potentiality of Uganda to attract more travelers was realized in the 8th annual tourism sector where a steady increase in tourist arrivals was confirmed. In order to meet the target of 1.56 million travelers next year (2018), the government has heavily invested in extensive marketing so as to polish the negative image of Uganda’s past times in the international market. It’s unfortunate that some international travelers still think of Uganda as a country of wars, famines and diseases. Similarly, peace and security has been restored especially in northern Uganda and tourism is done smoothly. Besides increased travelers, the government expects increased revenue earning from the current $1.37 Billion dollars to approximately $1.5 billion, which is roughly 5.4 trillion in 2018.

However, there is need for improvements in the country’s political atmosphere, which guarantee travelers safety, and smooth participation in all tourism activities. The government should also increases in tourism investments by developing new tourism products to provide a wide selection of what to do and see for the travelers.

Roads especially those connecting to national parks and other tourism spots in all parts of Uganda should be rehabilitated to ensure safe transport of travelers and their property. Uganda’s major tourism attractions are situated in the remote areas such as Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park in southwestern Uganda, Kidepo valley national park in north Eastern Uganda and Murchison falls national park in northwestern Uganda among others. Similarly other facilities such as hotels/lodges should be established in all parts of the country assuring travelers of quality food and sleeping services wherever they go at the affordable prices.

Conclusively therefore, Uganda is a unique tourism destination rewarding you with memorable experiences. Be part of a Uganda safari for 2018 and enjoy the beauty that nature provides.

With effect from 30th November 2017, the discounted gorilla permits will be no more in Uganda to those coming for gorilla trekking. Since 2014, Uganda wildlife authority has been offering promotional gorilla permit prices at a cost of 450usd in the low season between the months of April, May and November for gorilla trekkers. Foreign non-residents have been paying 450usd, foreign residents 400usd and East Africans 150,000ush something that makes Uganda a place for budget gorilla travelers. The major reason why UWA offered discount on gorilla permits was to encourage budget travelers to enjoy a lifetime gorilla trekking at a fair rate. Uganda is a home to the highest population of mountain gorillas roughly half of the world’s remaining population making which make it a best gorilla destination. Despite Rwanda’s abrupt doubling of the gorilla permit from 750usd to 1500usd in early May 2017, Uganda has maintained its gorilla permit price at 600usd.

Previously, 600usd has been paid in the peak season between the months of June, July, August, December, January, February and March. This would be reduced to 450 in April, May, October and November. These months are also known as low season mainly associated with heavy rainfall, muddy and low visits. The budget prices was therefore aimed at attracting the highest gorilla trekkers in this low season as well as introducing all travelers to the treasures the pearl of Africa offers.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is done in the tropical rain forests of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park both in southwestern Uganda. The two national parks shelter 13 habituated gorilla families 12 of which reside in Bwindi and 1 in Mgahinga gorilla national park. Uganda is an end pint for most gorilla trekkers which sheltering the highest population of gorillas roughly 480 in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park. Gorilla prices are similar in these two national parks.

Unlike gorilla trekking prices, gorilla habituation will keep at 1500usd allowing travelers to spend half day with the gorillas. Uganda wildlife authority is responsible for issuing out these permits to all travelers coming for gorilla safaris in Uganda to Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park forest . All permits require advance booking and payment of the booking fee is highly recommended to ensure timely allocation of gorilla families and avoid disappointments at the last hour. Gorilla habituation allow travelers to walk along with a group of conservationists, researchers and gorilla doctors to train the wild gorillas to get familiar with people.

The removal of the discounted gorilla permits is to deal with an increased demand for gorilla permits since Uganda has taken up Rwanda market due to the very expensive Rwanda’s gorilla permit. Similarly, a uniform gorilla permit cost is to support the conservation of the endangered mountain gorillas in Uganda hence ensuring sustainable gorilla tourism.

Low budget gorilla travelers are therefore reminded to book in the remaining days of October and November to enjoy this ending privilege. Other gorilla trekking rules such as seven-meter distance, keeping low tone, not littering in the park and avoiding close contact with the critically endangered gorillas are similar.
Conclusively therefore, Uganda is the best place for gorilla trekking. Be part of the Uganda safari and enjoy the once in life gorilla experience.
