Promotion of good health to all Ugandans is a priority for the government of Uganda. A health system comprised of health institutions, resources and organizations have been established by the government and non-governmental organizations to ensure good health. Various hospitals, health centers and clinics have been established in all parts of the country. The leading referral hospitals in Uganda include among others:

Mulago hospital
This is main national referral hospital in Uganda and the teaching hospital for medical students main Makerere University. Mulago hospital is the center for the highest population of patients in the whole country both out patients, inpatients, postnatal visits, emergencies and deliveries. Mulago was founded in 1913 hence the oldest and leading referral hospital in Uganda.

Kabale regional referral hospital
Situated in in kale district southwestern Uganda, the hospital serves over 2 million people from different regions in southwestern Uganda. These include kabale, kisoro, kanungu, Rukungiri, and the neighboring Ntungamo among others. Both out and inpatients are attended to by professional doctors and nurses.

Arua regional referral hospital
This was established in 1994 with funded by the Uganda ministry of health and general care in the hospital is free.

Masaka regional referral hospital
This was first established purposely to provide medical treatment for the veterans of world wa1 after which it was transformed as a referral hospital in 1996. It has a capacity of over 330 beds accommodating roughly 90.6% of the total population of patients. Out patient services as well as nutritional support services are all provided at the hospital.

Mbarara regional referral hospital
This is situated in Mbarara also as a medical school for science and technology at Mbarara University. The districts served by Mbarara hospital include Isingiro, Ntungamo, kiruhura, Mbarara, Bushenyi and ibanda among others.

Moroto regional referral hospital
The hospital was established in 1940 in Moroto district Karamoja region. Seven districts in northern Uganda including Abim, Moroto, Napak, kabongo, kotido, Amudat, and Nakapiripiti are served by Moroto regional referral hospital.
